Something between you changed.
It does not have to stay this way.

Most couples do not drift apart in one argument. It happens slowly, in the things that stop getting said. The way back works the same way, one honest conversation at a time.

Couples therapy - $30 a session

Free 20-minute phone consultation. Limited spots available.

You might recognize one of these.

The roommates

You handle logistics, schedules and the dog. You cannot remember the last real conversation.

The same argument

It starts somewhere different every time and ends in exactly the same place.

The one who pushes and the one who goes quiet

One of you needs to talk it out. The other needs the room to stop spinning. Both of you end up alone.

The slow drift

Nothing is wrong, exactly. You are just less us than you used to be.

The resentment you can't put down

You have forgiven it out loud, and it is still sitting there.

"After this"

After this semester, this deadline, this move. Somehow the two of you keep ending up at the bottom of the list

Different stories, same root. When the connection between two people stops feeling safe, they both start protecting themselves in ways that keep them apart.

That pattern is not who you are. It is what you do when you want things to be different, but you do not know how to get there yet.

Underneath the argument about the dishes, there is usually a loop, and it looks different for every couple. Sometimes one partner pushes and the other pulls away. Sometimes one gets angry or defensive to shut the argument down, or to talk the other out of what they feel. However it shows up, each person is protecting themselves, and each move sets off the other. Round and round, sometimes for years.

The silence and the fighting are not signs that you chose wrong. They are what people do when reaching for each other has hurt too many times. The reach still matters. We can help you find the words.

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy

EFCT was developed by Dr. Sue Johnson and is built on attachment science, the study of how people bond and what happens when those bonds feel threatened. It is one of the most thoroughly researched models of couples therapy there is.

The work happens in the room. Instead of teaching you techniques and sending you home to try them in the middle of an argument, your therapist helps the two of you actually experience doing things differently, together, in session.

Supervised care, on every case.

Sessions are with Evelyn Hong, MA, a doctoral candidate at the University of Illinois who is training in EFCT at True Connections. Every case is supervised by Emily Mohr, PhD, a licensed psychologist and certified EFCT therapist with more than 20 years of clinical experience.

Wondering if a therapist in training is as effective? Research on therapy outcomes shows that trainees achieve results similar to seasoned therapists, especially with evidence-based models like EFCT. They carry smaller caseloads, spend more focused time on each client, and receive supervision on every case.

Not a discount version of our care.

To make training possible, sessions with our EFCT trainee therapist are offered at $30. Same model, same practice, same standard of care.

$30 a session

  • Couples, 55 minutes

  • Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy - the same model used throughout the practice
