Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy?

Have you ever tried remembering something you just learned while you're panicking?  Let's just say that it doesn't usually go well.  EFCT recognizes that you can't be taught something in session and then expect to just do it when emotional are running high.  If it was really that easy you wouldn't need couples therapy! EFCT is an experiential therapy meaning that the work is really done in session.  Your therapist will help you to actually experience doing things differently with your partner rather than telling you how and then sending you off to do it without support. This can look like a lot of things, but generally it means helping you notice what is actually happening inside you that makes you react to your partner in unhelpful ways.  It also means helping you talk to your partner about what you long for in your connection with them rather than just talking about what you think they are doing wrong.

How is relationship therapy different from other kinds of therapy?

The main difference is the focus.  You might go to regular therapy for anxiety, depression, eating issues, or many other things that are causing you difficulty.  Relationship therapy is specifically meant to help you work on how you think, feel, and act in relationships.  This could mean that you want to work on getting over a messy breakup, have more success finding suitable partners, shift the patterns that you have in current relationships, or work on repairing ruptured connections with important people in your life.  Relationship therapy probably will help you feel more content and less stressed in general, but the point is not to treat depression, anxiety, or other mental health conditions.  It is to help you have greater success in your connections with other people, which are some of the most important pieces of overall happiness and well-being.

Does therapy on the computer (telehealth) really work?

You bet it does!  In fact, the research comparing telehealth and in-person therapy demonstrates that there really are no differences in outcomes or client experience.  We provide teletherapy because it allows our clients to get quality services that they would not otherwise have access to if they were limited to therapists near them, or times when they are able to travel to the therapist's office.

To have the best teletherapy experience, make sure you are in a quiet, private place where you won't be distracted or interrupted.  Also, it's usually best to use a tablet, laptop, or desktop computer rather than a phone so your session can feel more immersive.  We want your teletherapy to feel just as dynamic and engaging as an in-person session. With a little planning it absolutely can!
